It's hard to believe that the Despicable Me minions have only been around for five years. It seems like everywhere you turn there's a minion or minion reference. The directors of Despicable Me said the minions were added to the script, in an attempt to make Gru more likable. The easiest way to make him look better? Surround him with incompetence.
