It's hard to believe that the Despicable Me minions have only been around for five years. It seems like everywhere you turn there's a minion or minion reference. If you're thinking to yourself "what is a minion?" then you probably don't have kids and will be thankful for all the minions facts on this list. These little buggers took the world by storm in 2010's Despicable Me and haven't stopped since. 

Despicable Me was an expected smash hit and its sequel 2013 Despicable Me 2 was an even bigger success making nearly a billion dollars at the box office (and that's before home video sales). With summer 2015's Minions breaking the records set by Despicable Me 2 the minion phenomenon doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon.

There's clearly something special about these these small, Twinkie-shaped, minion-ese speaking, banana-loving henchmen, that the whole world adores.

The Three Lead Minions in 2015's Minions Were Very Specifically Designed

The three minions were designed to resemble Gru's daughters: Margo, Agnes, and Edith. As the film is a prequel, it's a bit of foreshadowing of what's to come for their species.

At the end of Despicable Me, after the girls' bedroom has transformed into a more comforting place, the camera moves allowing the audience to see some famous paintings that Gru has stolen. Leonardo Da Vinci''s "Mona Lisa" hangs on the wall, as well as Van Gogh's "Starry Night," which can be seen leaning up against the wall on the floor.

Minions Has a Cute Way of Establishing Its Chronology

The film takes place in 1968 and 42 years B.G. ("Before Gru"). If you add 42 years to 1968, it would be 2010, the year Gru and the minions made their debut in Despicable Me.

The Minions Were Always Created to Serve Gru, Even in the Script Phase as a Plot Point

The directors of Despicable Me said the minions were added to the script, in an attempt to make Gru more likable. The easiest way to make him look better? Surround him with incompetence.


They even got progressively cuter to achieve this. They went from humans to large, orc-like creatures, and throughout further development got smaller and more adorable until the iconic appearance that made it into the films.

The Minion Language Is a Mix of Real Languages from All Over the World

The directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud actually voice the minions and in providing the voices, they used words from languages including French, English, Spanish, and Italian with additional elements of Russian and Korean. 

“There are a lot of food references,” Renaud said. “For example, ‘poulet tiki masala’ is French for the Indian chicken dish.”
